In celebration of the YMCA’s partnership with the Australian Governments’ Girls Make Your Move Campaign, the Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities held a Glow In The Dark Zumba Party for teenage girls in Boroondara.

Research revealed that girls in Australia aged 12-19 yrs are 50% less active than males in the same age demographic. The Girls Make Your Move Campaign aimed to encourage sport and activity to be a natural part of young women’s lives with exercise being enjoyed, not endured.

On Sunday 25 June, over 80 girls took part in a stadium sized Glow In The Dark Zumba Party at the Boroondara Sports Complex for two hours of dancing, laughing and working up a sweat under the glow of special UV lights.

Project Director, Eliza Daniel said that the event highlighted the important role physical exercise plays in young women’s physical and mental health. “Many girls drop out of exercise during their teenage years due to peer pressure, study commitments, body image concerns or low self-esteem. This event was all about getting your friends together, having a laugh and leaving those concerns at the door!”

It was a fantastic evening, celebrating women being active with all ticket sales going towards YMCA Open Doors.
