It has now been seven months since Ashburton Pool and Recreation Centre planted its community garden and now the fruits (or vegetables) of all the hard work is benefiting the community through the local family centre.

The donation of lettuce, kale, beetroot, beans, turnips and spinach to the Craig Family Centre, who conduct cooking classes for people with disability has been much appreciated by all the participants. The Craig is also distributing the produce amongst families that are in need. This support has not gone unnoticed by their staff. One of their members said: “the contribution of the fresh vegetables is having such a positive influence for people visiting the Craig, they love it”.

The positive impact the community garden is having has also been felt by its volunteers.

“It’s really rewarding to see all the work that we are doing contributing to such a great cause. It’s also a brilliant excuse to get active outdoors!” said Barb, leader of the community garden volunteers at APARC.

With the summer crop planted and already growing, APARC and its volunteers are looking at how to make the Community Garden even bigger and better in 2018!
